Last summer, I had the opportunity to be an intern for the City of Memphis Police Department. I worked in the finance division located in the Shelby County Criminal Justice Complex in Memphis, Tenn. I received this internship through the City of Memphis Ambassadors Program I was involved in during my senior year of high school. I joined several other interns in being welcomed by the police department, where we received daily job assignments.
Each day, I had the opportunity to fulfill a different assignment related to accounting and finance. I assisted with preparing financial reports for companies within the county budget, entered company invoices into a specific financial spreadsheet system; sorted and pulled company contracts when needed;and delivered deposit tickets to City Hall to ensure the amounts were paid and closed properly.
When I began this internship, I didn’t really know what to expect. While I knew I wanted to study accounting in college, I did not know much about , other than the little I had researched the field prior to the internship. Going into the internship I didn’t know what to expect, but I knew accounting would be a field that that I would like to pursue a career in once I graduated from college.
Through this internship and the Accounting courses I am currently taking at Xavier, I was able to see and get a better understanding of what it’s like to be an Accountant, as well as how the different job assignments I performed relate to one another.
I am extremely thankful for having such an amazing internship experience this past summer that will help me further my understanding of Accounting and the courses I will be taking in the future.
